Enhanced aviation security for the CaribbeanFriday, August 11, 2006GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: Enhanced security measures have been implemented at most, if not all, of the region’s airports following Thursday's news of a foiled bomb plot in Britain. New aviation security measures are being directed by the UK’s Department for Transport. However, with the threat being directed to US airlines, the CIAA will facilitate implementation of US directives to carriers flying to the U.S. Effective immediately, the following enhanced security measures will typically be applied to airline passengers departing from Caribbean airports.
These new security measures will also apply to all persons entering restricted areas of airports, including airport staff. Airlines may also choose to follow more stringent security measures. The airlines will inform the public of any additional measures that they may put in place. Airlines are advising passengers to arrive three hours prior to flight departure to avoid delays and to ensure proper security measures are implemented. In addition, passengers are asked to pack all liquid items except the exempted items into checked luggage, in order to avoid delays at screening checkpoints. As yet, there are no restrictions on such items in checked luggage. British Airways has confirmed that it will adopt the US measures on its flights, said BA Grand Cayman Station Manager Marlene Moore-Ebanks, namely, passengers travelling from all UK airports may only take through the airport security search point, the following items:
Every other item must be packed in customer's hold luggage. Out of Grand Cayman passengers will be allowed to carry as hand luggage electronic and battery-powered items, such as laptop, ipods, mobile phones, remotes controls, etc., as long as travellers are terminating their journey in London. These items are still not allowed out of UK airports. The following measures are being implemented on all flights bound for the United Kingdom and the United States originating at the V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua: No liquids, including, gels, shampoo, suntan lotion, alcohol toothpaste, and items of similar consistency are allowed in carry-on luggage. Liquids or gels that are purchased at shops inside the departure area of airports will not be allowed on the aircraft. Passengers are advised to pack these restricted items in their checked luggage. Passengers are also advised that with the additional security measures to expect more extensive screenings and are required to be at the airport for check-in three hours before departure. Passengers are encouraged to travel light to expedite the screening process. Air Jamaica has implemented similar measures on all its flights.
