Cuba condemns US exile community

Saturday, August 5, 2006

HAVANA, Cuba (UPI): The Cuban state-controlled media has condemned Cuban-Americans in Miami for celebrating Fidel Castro's surgery and temporary delegation of power to his brother.

The Cuban dictator underwent surgery earlier this week for intestinal bleeding.

On the nightly news program "Mesa Redonda" (Round Table), presenter Reinaldo Taladrid said "these people (Cuban-Americans and their lawmakers) live off the anti-Cuba industry," the Miami Herald reported Friday.

Meanwhile, a Cuban-American lawmaker in Washington expressed disappointment Friday that the Cuba Transition Act was not approved before the Senate adjourned for its August weekend.

The act would have provided Cuban opposition groups with up to $80 million.

"I am disappointed that we could not use this moment in history to ensure that we are prepared to help the Cuban people attain freedom," said Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) "The Cuba Transition Act is a step in that direction."
