LONDON, England: Jamaican Reggae Boyz central defender Claude Davis has been sidelined with a knee cartilage injury and may have to wait until September to play in his debut season in the English Premier League.
The 27-year-old became Sheffield United's record signing after he transferred from Preston North End for a fee of £2.5m and his injury will be a big blow to the team's back-line, which had him playing a big part in keeping the team's chances of surviving against the giants playing in the top flight this forthcoming season.
Davis suffered the injury in the second half of a friendly match against Notts County this week and according to his team's website, the Jamaican centre-back may have to undergo an operation to help his heal his problem.
"Results of a scan revealed that central defender Davis, who limped off after 66 minutes of the goalless draw at Notts County on Tuesday night, has damaged knee cartilage and may face an operation to correct the problem," the team official website reported.
"Claude Davis will be out for up to six weeks. The injury looks set to rule the record signing out of United's opening matches of the Premiership season," the report added.
According Neil Warnock, manager of the newly promoted side, Davis' current situation is one which they will have to keenly monitor during the upcoming weeks.
"Claude had to come off as a precaution. He keeps aggravating the knock he picked up earlier in pre-season," Warnock told the club's website.
"We will have to make a decision on whether to rest him or take him to Holland, but we will find out more in the next 24 to 48 hours; it's a case of wait and see."
