BRIDGETOWN, Barbados:

The Barbados-based Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) has launched its Caribbean channel, CaribVision.

CMC officials are hailing it as an authentic regional channel and a one-stop shop for all things Caribbean. Chief Operating Officer, Errol Clarke says its part of CMC's commitment to sustain the public communication process on the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Chairman, Darcy Boyce stressed that the Caribbean media is ripe for substantial new development because people want to know what is happening across the region. He says the channel also represents a world of opportunities for the exposure, development and strengthening of our people, culture and economies.

Speaking at the launch of the channel, Barbados' Prime Minister Owen Arthur says it should make it easier to achieve the CSME.Mr Arthur, who has lead responsibility for the CSME, says there has been a dangerous void in information about the region at a time when Caribbean nationals have real time access to developments in every other corner of the world.

"This does not have to be so," he says. "Initiatives like CaribVision can truly be the salvation route out of what would otherwise be the most barren of terrains."

"CaribVision will hopefully make it easier to achieve the CSME by successfully addressing the communication deficit which has frustrated the earlier attempts at federation and which has been the bane of the regional integration movement ever since then."
