Annan delays visit to Haiti due to aircraft woes

Thursday, August 3, 2006

UNITED NATIONS, USA (Reuters): U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan delayed a visit to Haiti on Wednesday after the commercial aircraft he was to use experienced technical difficulties, the United Nations said.

"His trip has been postponed for a day," U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe said. "He plans to still go to Haiti tomorrow."

The United Nations has had a peacekeeping mission in Haiti since June 2004. It was sent to support the interim government formed after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide fled into exile under international pressure.

Annan is to meet with new Haitian President Rene Preval and other top officials before traveling to the Dominican Republic to meet with President Leonel Fernandez.
