NEW DELHI, India: The Indian Cricket Board has confirmed that New Zealand and Sri Lanka are on standby to replace the West Indies if the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) fails to confirm the regional team's participation in the tri-series in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur next month.

"The WICB have sought time to speak to their players and give us their decision," Niranjan Shah, the Indian Board's secretary, said.

"In case they say no, we have other teams who are eager to play. Australia have given their consent. In a week's time, we should know one way or the other about West Indies' participation."

The WICB announced Monday night that it made a commitment to participate in the series, which also includes Australia, stating that it was meeting with players' representatives to get thing fully sorted out. According to reports, the two parties met on Monday and were expected to come to some agreement before the end of the week.

"We have been invited by BCCI to make ourselves available for a triangular series in September involving India, Australia and West Indies," a release from the WICB said.

"We are seeking to discuss this proposed series with the players and a team headed by Mr Deryck Murray will be meeting with the players' representative. No final decision has been made on the participation of the Board in this series."

The release added that: "It must be emphasised that this is the culmination of efforts going back to June 2006 when the BCCI and WICB signed an agreement to co-operate with each other in the development of cricket in North America.

"At that time, we were hoping to play ODI's in the US and Canada subject to the availability of approved venues. It is only when those efforts on the part of North America failed in the last two weeks that BCCI has been making subsequent efforts to arrange a series in the Far East.
