BVI Executive Council appoints official spokesperson
Thursday, July 27, 2006
ROAD TOWN, BVI: The British Virgin Islands Executive Council has appointed an official spokesperson to be responsible for communicating its decisions to the public.
In a recent decision, Executive Council appointed Director of Communications in the Chief Minister's Office, Sandra Ward, as its official spokesperson.
The spokesperson's duty is to inform the public on decisions taken by Executive Council and to make other timely and necessary announcements relating to Executive Council decisions.
Ms. Ward said the appointment is another opportunity to keep the public updated on issues in the Executive Council. Among other things, the director of communications will initiate occasional media briefings where she will update the public on various Executive Council matters.
It has also been agreed that communication strategies will generally be integrated with papers presented to Executive Council for approval, and the director of communications will be responsible for recommending these strategies.
Executive Council is the branch of Government which takes policy decisions on a wide variety of issues concerning the governance of the Territory. It is made up of Governor David Peary; Chief Minister Dr. Orlando Smith and the other ministers of Government, and Attorney General Cherno Jallow. The council meets weekly on Wednesdays.
