Powell sparkles in Stockholm

Wednesday, July 26, 2006

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AFP): Asafa Powell failed in his latest bid to reclaim sole ownership of the world 100m record here Tuesday, but was still too strong for a star-studded field at the Stockholm Super Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old Jamaican sprinter, who shares the world mark with American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin at 9.77sec, romped home in 9.86 at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, the fourth fastest time of the year.

Tyson Gay of the United States was second in 9.97, with Marcus Brunson third in 10.09. It was the fourth time this season that Powell has ducked under the 9.9 barrier.

Although Powell was frustrated in his attempt to better his world mark, he will take consolation from the fact that his win came with a near non-existent following wind of +0.2 m/s.

With a stronger legal breeze behind him, the record would have been in serious jeopardy.

Nevertheless Powell's performance was still good enough to break Maurice Greene's seven-year-old stadium record of 9.87, earning the Jamaican star a 10,000-dollar diamond offered by the meeting's promoters.

In the men's 400m, Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner underlined his dominance of the event with another comfortable victory.

Wariner, fresh from posting a blistering 43.62 in Rome last week, clocked 44.02, just over half a second clear of DR Congo's Gary Kikaya and American-born Jamaican athlete Brandon Simpson, who has switched his allegiances to the Gulf State of Bahrain.

In the women's events, there was a superb performance from Sherone Simpson in the 200m, the Jamaican star equalling her season best of 22.0, the quickest time in the world this year.
