GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Merely days into his appointment, the United States Embassy has revoked the visitor's visa of Guyana's Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene after it had revoked his diplomatic visa earlier this year.

The move comes as a shock since Greene has been tipped to replace Commissioner Winston Felix who is now on pre-retirement leave.

Greene has received communication about the visa revocation, but said he is still to know the reason behind the move.

The US Embassy here has revoked the visas of prominent Guyanese officials whose characters are often publicly in doubt. Observers say the move, which has also been adopted by other foreign missions in the South American country, is one that seeks to bring pressure on public officials.

Similarly, two years ago Former Acting Police Commissioner, Floyd Mc Donald, and Home Affairs Minister, Ronald Gajraj, had their visas revoked as rumors exploded about their links to a killing squad formed to counter criminal elements during the shadowy post February 2002 jail break era.
