Caribbean eyes better growth rate for 2006
Wednesday, July 26, 2006
SANTIAGO, Chile (AFP): The economies of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean taken as a whole will grow at a better-than-forecast five percent clip this year as exports rise, a UN body reported Tuesday.
It was an upward revision from the Santiago-based UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which had forecast a 4.6 percent growth rate for the region back in April.
The group also forecast a 4.5 percent economic growth rate for the region as a whole for 2007.
The strongest regional growth rates this year were projected for Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, at 8.0 percent, and Argentina, at 7.6 percent, the ECLAC said.
Other major economies, such as Brazil and Mexico, were expected to see four percent growth, it said.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, was forecast to mark the weakest growth, at 2.5 percent, the group said.
