ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The Ministry of Social Development is continuing to place serious emphasis on the fight against juvenile delinquency in Grenada.

The Division of Social Services within the Ministry of Social Development began its second annual Youth Reform Camp on Thursday July 20, 2006.

The Camp is a 20-bed military-style training program for juvenile offenders who have been convicted of lesser-level violent offences, as well as those who have displayed the potential for same.

The six-week live-in camp is designed under the theme of development through discipline. The entire program is performance-based, and the youths will progress through the phases based on performance level.

The Social Service Youth Reform Camp program focuses on teaching leadership skills, physical training, personal and family development, self-esteem, drug and substance abuse and remedial academic classes.

The participants will also be required to provide some form of community service.

The program will promote traditional moral values, instil proper work ethic, provide discipline to youth through physical conditioning and teamwork, promote literacy and increase academic achievement.

Activities will also include interventions to reduce drug and alcohol abuse, encourage participants to become productive, law-abiding citizens and ensure that juvenile offenders are held accountable for their offences.

Staff members at Social Service Youth Reform Camp are expected to interact with the campers in a firm, but non-abusive manner.
