White is bad for you

Thursday, July 20, 2006

I read with alarm the article written by Sir Ronald Sanders about 'Save lives and money' and would like to take this opportunity in agreeing with most of what was written.

However, the major factor in all this obesity and chronic diseases stories to me is the stoppage of use of coconut oil. As much as can be said for the benefits of coconut oil, there are published US documents on the evils of coconut oil.

Okay, so since we as a Caribbean people have ceased to use coconut oil in our diets, has our health improved any?

Okay, so lack of exercise may be blamed as another reason, there again, the medium chain fatty acids, which are dominant in coconut oil, are easily metabolised in the stomach providing 'instant energy', as can be testified to in the case of baby foods, which have a high percentage of lauric acid.

So all around, one of the cures for all our Caribbean health ailments can be found in our own products, if we have the guts to stick by our guns, and not go begging to Uncle Sam. The Caribbean food slogan should be white is bad for you - white sugar, white flour and white rice.
