Powell leads six Caribbean sprinters vying for DN Galan dash titleThursday, July 20, 2006by Gary Smith STOCKHOLM, Sweden: Six Caribbean athletes, including co-world record Asafa Powell, were announced for the men's 100-metre dash for the 40th anniversary of the DN Galan - IAAF Super Grand Prix in Stockholm, Sweden, scheduled for Tuesday July 25. In fact, all six sprinters are from Caribbean powerhouse Jamaica and they are all expected to produce impressive performances. Leading the way will be Powell, who equalled the world record mark, shared with American Justin Gatlin, at 9.77 seconds at the Gateshead Grand Prix earlier this season and it will take something special for his competitors to dislodge him. The other Jamaicans entered in the field are Powell's training partner Michael Frater, the World silver medallist from Helsinki, last year, Christopher Williams, the 2001 World silver medallist in the 200m, Dwight Thomas, who trains with Gatlin in North Carolina, as well as two young sprinters, Nesta Cater and Mario Forsythe, who are in modest form this season. The Jamaicans, however, will not be the only contenders in the event, as it will also feature Xavier "X-Man" Carter, one of the new sprint sensations impending from the collegiate campaign this year. American Marcus Brunson and Bernard Williams are also big name athletes listed in the line up to race for the title. Meanwhile, Sherone Simpson, the world leader over the sprint double this season has been confirmed for women's 200m dash. Simpson, who has world and personal bests of 10.82 and 22.00 will come face-to-face with Jamaican-born American in-form sprinter Sanya Richards and Commonwealth Games 100m champion Sheri-Ann Brooks of Jamaica and Bahamian veteran Debbie Ferguson.
