Dominica set to benefit from Commonwealth project

Thursday, July 13, 2006

ROSEAU, Dominica: Persons working in the professional services sector in Commonwealth Caribbean countries will get an opportunity to enhance their ability to increase trade in professional services when the “Strategic Programme for the Promotion of Professional Services” Project is implemented in Dominica.

The Project, coordinated and funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Barbados-based Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), will be launched at the Garraway Hotel in Roseau on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 9:00 am.

The small states of the Commonwealth depend heavily on exports of goods and services; however, the erosion of preferences by trade liberalization commitments have adversely affected their economic situation, hence the need for this Project at this time.

The Project is intended to enhance the capability of these countries to diversify their economies to increase their services trade, in particular trade in professional services. Dominica, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have been chosen by Caribbean Export as pilot cases to be used for developing an approach.

The overall objective of this Project is to build the capacity of Caribbean Export to assist its members in developing a Strategic Programme for the Promotion of Professional Services

This Project will heighten the awareness of the economic potential of and development of export of professional services from the Commonwealth Caribbean.

The professional services sub-sectors with possible potential for expanded export include -Legal, medical and healthcare, education, engineering related, construction related, accounting, managing, planning, film, Software development and IT-related services.

The launching of the Project will include an inception meeting when the Project will be formally presented to the various professional services sectors. This will be conducted by the project consultants Emerging Market Economies (EME).

Remarks at Friday’s launching will be delivered by Charles Savarin, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Labour, Andrew Satney, Project Manager, Commonwealth Secretariat, Veona Maloney, Project Manager, Caribbean Export and a representative of the CARICOM Secretariat.
