Soca Warriors appoint Rijsbergen

Thursday, July 13, 2006

PORT OF SPAIN,, Trinidad (AFP): Former Dutch international Wim Rijsbergen was confirmed as the new coach of Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.

Rijsbergen, 54, had served as Leo Beenhakker's assistant during the Soca Warriors' World Cup campaign in Germany this summer.

He agreed a four-year contract after meetings with Beenhakker, Trinidad et Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special advisor Jack Warner and General Secretary Richard Groden.

Beenhakker, who took over as Poland manager this week, will occasionally attend Trinidad matches as a technical advisor to Rijsbergen, who will be assisted by Anton Corneal and Dutchman Jan Van Deinsen.

Rijsbergen, who can also draw on the experience of senior players Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy, will take charge of his first match in a friendly against an as yet un-named opponent on September 2.

A statement on the Trinidad and Tobago website said: "This is to confirm that Wim Rijsbergen has accepted the post of head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Team.

"The TTFF remains highly appreciative towards Mr Beenhakker for his services towards the uplifting of the countrys football and for his guiding of the team to the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany. We also wish him the very best in his new role with the Polish FA."
