LETTER TO THE EDITORSt Lucia Food and Rum Festival no coincidenceWednesday, July 12, 2006Dear Sir:
Why is it that activities coordinators over on our beautiful sister island of St Lucia are so hell bent on ousting Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival, now into its 10th year of existence; the Caribbean’s most unique festival of all times? To me, this appears to be criminology at its highest. Wasn’t it just last year, that we saw the creation of the Callaloo Festival? Now we’re hearing of a Food and Rum festival to be staged on exactly the weekend during which we in Dominica are expected to stage the highlights of our World Class event. What next are we to expect? Do we expect to see next year the creation of Caribbean Soca Festival? Is this reason enough for which some creative mind here on Dominica to decide on staging Nature Jazz, at the very same time during St. Lucia’s staging of St. Lucia Jazz Festival? I honestly do not think that this was at all an oversight or even a coincidence at a time when every party lover through the region, and should I be bold enough to say the world, knows that he or she should be on the lookout for Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival’s staging during the last weekend in October, each year. At a time during which talks of Caribbean Unity is high on the agenda of every Government within the region (or is it more talk than action) why couldn’t this activity be considered for sometime during that island’s national day or even independence day celebrations. Aren’t we, but one Caribbean people? Is this Festival, one intended to somewhat simmer down, the rather high influx of St Lucian patrons who year after year, celebrate with us during our three nights of pulsating music? It is my hope that these organizers reconsider their dates, as I see no reason for being in such fierce competition with each other. Jepson L.
