Campbell could make early returnMonday, July 10, 2006by Gary Smith FORT LAUDERDALE, USA: It has been reported that Jamaica's 200-metre Olympic champion Veronica Campbell, could make a return to the track at Tuesday's (July 11) Athletissima Super Grand Prix in Lausanne, Switzerland, following a muscle injury, which forced her to miss several big meetings already this season. Although there is still no conformation as to whether the Jamaican will compete at the meeting, seeing that the projected eight weeks rehabilitation is still in progress, Caribbean Net News understands that, if she's fit, the organisers would love to have the sprinter make her comeback in the 100-metre dash at the 31st edition of the meeting. However, should Campbell, the most decorated female athlete at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in Greece, make a return, she will have her hands full as the line-up has attracted several world-class sprinters, including American former multi-Olympic champion Marion Jones and this season's 100m world leader Sherone Simpson. Also expected to compete in the race is Lauryn Williams, the World champion from Helsinki last summer, World Indoor 60m champion Me'Lisa Barber, former world champion Torri Edwards as well as the Bahamian pair of Debbie Ferguson and Chandra Sturrup. Campbell, who sustained a torn muscle in her left quad as she approached the home straight at a meeting in Gateshead, England, last month, was earlier scheduled to make a return sometime in August. The injury forced her to miss the Jamaica National Championships in Kingston, last month, a meet which saw Simpson electrifying with a world best performance of 10.82. The performance bettered Campbell's previous world best of 10.99, achieved at the 2006 adidas Track Classic in Carson, California. Back...Most popular articles: viewed, printed and e-mailed
