The number three seeds won 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 23-21 in a match that had started on Tuesday afternoon but had been suspended because of poor light at 11-11 in the final set.

The previous longest match at Wimbledon was a men's second round singles clash between Americans Greg Holmes and Todd Witsken in 1989 which lasted five hours and 28 minutes.

Knowles and Nestor will face Bob and Mike Bryan in the semi-finals.

"It would have been toiugh had we lost," said Nestor after a tie in which he and his partner saved six match points.

"They played a great match. We hung in there really tough and we're pretty proud of ourselves for hanging in there."

Knowles said they were proud to have set a new record.

"It's very exciting," said Knowles.

"We didn't think we'd make it in this fashion, but we don't even really know what history we made."
