LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I read Ms Adams article with great interest and delight

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

Dear Sir:

I read Ms Adams' article, with great interest and delight. Her concerns about Caribbean people in the Diaspora are very well founded.

Of even more concern is the situation in the islands themselves. The attitudes and activities of adults that she points out are similar to what exists among us down here. One may understand that just surviving in America today is an achievement which has to be celebrated with food and drink.

However, to ignore the fact that we are in a larger never ending struggle against our own governments, yours and ours, is to invite disaster. Serious matters, as she indicates, have to be included.

Our young in the islands ape the alien culture and attitudes of America from the television. The weekly youth magazine focuses on the American entertainment scene and personalities. They are not told about and the adults are forgetting the spirit of Quao, Nanny, Sharpe and all the other great heroes of the Caribbean.

For our youth to frame their identity in the same model as black Americans, is to make themselves a problem. The corporate media, with the exception for attention the few Hollywood stars, sports personalities and politicians, portray the millions of blacks in America and Africans as problems.

We are in a continual struggle against the insidiousness. Our young have to be taught the new resistance strategies needed to survive, just as the older ones remember the struggles of those whose earlier struggle have got us to where are now.

Thanks for the delightful article, and my best wishes for a successful career.
