BVI to mark 50th anniversary

Thursday, June 29, 2006

ROAD TOWN, BVI: The government of the British Virgin Islands will host a special ceremony this Saturday, July 1, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Virgin Islands becoming a Territory.

During his State of the Territory Address, Chief Minister Dr Orlando Smith spoke about the significance of this day.

“Territory Day celebrates the decision in 1956 to establish the BVI as an autonomous Territory,” the Chief Minister told the gathering, adding that the historical milestone began “a process that continues to this day of empowering the people and the local Government of the British Virgin Islands.”

Smith said, “We celebrate Territory Day every July 1, but this year the holiday will be particularly meaningful because we are celebrating exactly 50 years since the birth of our Territory as a separate political entity.”

Chief Education Officer Angel Smith, who is coordinating the special celebration, said that the 50th anniversary is a significant milestone in any organisation.

“As we continue our advancement along the paths of self-government and economic development, it is vital that we remain grounded and ever cognisant of our history,” he said.

He said that this celebration provides an opportunity for Virgin Islanders to boldly affirm their identity and develop a sense of national pride.

The ceremony will begin with the inspection of the guards by Governor David Pearey and Chief Minister Dr Orlando Smith. There will be musical selections by various schools, including the BVI High School Jazz Band. Deputy Governor Dancia Penn will chair the proceedings.

The Ministry and Department of Education and Culture are encouraging the public to come out and celebrate this significant milestone and be a part of this historic event.
