Two stowaways found dead aboard ship from Dominican Republic

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

MIAMI, USA (UPI): Crew members of a ship docked at Miami found two dead stowaways sealed inside a cargo container, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The dead stowaways were found aboard the Seaboard Trader, a 450-foot freighter, which had stopped in the Dominican Republic before heading for Miami, the Miami Herald reported.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil told the Herald the two had been sealed in the container for four days. They were found during a routine security sweep.

Two other stowaways were found alive. They were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in serious condition, fire officials said.

There was no immediate word on whether the stowaways had any food or water for their trip. Shipping officials said temperatures in the container could have reached 150 degrees.
