Woman sues over Turks & Caicos hotel attack

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

NEW YORK, USA (UPI): A New York woman is suing a Turks and Caicos Islands resort after she and a friend were robbed at gunpoint.

Janis Aurichio, a Manhattan real estate broker, was staying in a $1,000-a-night suite at the Amanyara Hotel in April when five men broke in and terrorized her and a friend for nearly an hour, ABC News reported.

Aurichio, who blames the resort for allegedly failing to provide adequate security and to disclose safety information in its literature, is suing the hotel and its Singapore-based parent company, Amanresorts, for $10 million.

"She went down to a little paradise and wound up in Dante's Hell," her attorney David Jaroslawicz told ABC News.

The complaint, filed on Tuesday with the Supreme Court of the State of New York, said five masked men armed with machine guns forced their way into Aurichio's room demanding money and valuables. They allegedly beat Aurichio's male friend and threatened to rape Aurichio.
