US prison officer charged in BVI with explosives offences

ROAD TOWN, BVI: An American correctional officer with the Justice Department in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, has been arrested and charged in the British Virgin Islands with explosives and firearms offences.

Police have confirmed that that Steven Lewis Sr. of St. Thomas has been charged with two counts of unlawful importation of explosives; two counts of unlawful possession of explosives; failing to declare a firearm to Customs; failing to declare explosives to Customs and carrying an unlicensed firearm.

According to police records, on Friday, June 23, 2006 at 4:15 p.m., Lewis was arrested and charged following a search of his luggage by customs officials at the West End Ferry Terminal, after disembarking from a ferry arriving from St Thomas.

Lewis remains in Police custody until his appearance at Magistrate’s Court.  He is expected to appear before the Magistrate on Tuesday.
