PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook parts of North Trinidad on Tuesday sending tremors through several areas.
Residents said they felt the shaking as far as Diego Martin and Cocorite in the west, Maraval towards the northern coast and St Joseph in the east.
The earthquake struck around 8:25 am on Tuesday. There was however no reports of structural damage or injury to human or animal life.
The Seismic Research Unit at the University of the West Indies in St Augustine, Trinidad, recorded the preliminary location for the event as 10.91°N 62.10°W. The focal depth was approximately 62 km.
The Seismic Research Unit, the agency responsible for monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes for the English-speaking islands of the Eastern Caribbean as well as the Dutch islands of Saba, St Eustatius and St Martin, has been advising residents not to take these tremors lightly. It says residents must always be prepared for any impending disaster.
Two recent earthquakes to have hit Trinidad occurred in March measuring 3.5 and before that in December last year.
