Monday, June 12, 2006

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): Two armed gangs clashed over control of a generator to see the World Cup, leaving six people dead, sources close to the United Nations mission in Haiti said last week.

The gang battles occurred in Cite Soleil, the biggest and one of the most violent shantytowns in Port-au-Prince.

Between five and six hours of power are available every day in certain quarters of the capital.

The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) of Haiti plans to distribute battery-powered televisions, footballs and Haitian flags during the World Cup, which opened Friday in Germany.
