EU to commit 22 billion euros in aid to ACP countries

Friday, June 2, 2006

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AFP): The European Union is expected to commit some 22 billion euros (28 billion dollars) in aid to the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of countries from 2008-2013, an EU official said Thursday.

The package, given the green light in Brussels in December, is due to be approved at a meeting of EU and ACP ministers in Papua New Guinea on Thursday and Friday, said a spokesman for the European Commission.

Some 21.966 billion euros, from the European Development Fund, will go to the 77-member group for development projects, with 236 million euros earmarked for Europe's overseas territories.

It will cost around 430 million euros to deliver and operate the package.

Once the package is adopted, it will have to be approved by the EU's 25 member states and the commission, the EU's executive, will then organise with the ACP countries which sectors should be funded.

The spokesman said the aid package amounts to a 35-percent increase over that allocated for the 2003-2007 period.
