One-day international staging boosts local cricket in St Kitts-NevisFriday, May 26, 2006BASSETERRE, St Kitts: St Kitts and Nevis and the cricket world continue to reverberate from the thrilling victory of the Windies in the 3rd One-Day International held May 23, in St. Kitts. A loud voice in the chorus is that of St Kitts Cricket Association President Ingleton Liburd who stresses the impact of the game on the local programme.
“They (the young local players) are talking about the shots that Sarwan made and even the sweep shot from Lara … even though he didn’t last long (at the wicket),” Liburd disclosed, adding that several of the local cricketers served as liaison officers and room attendants. “That gave them a sense of what it is like to be a professional player.” Liburd noted that he received many flattering comments on the new Warner Park Cricket Stadium. “Everybody that I spoke to (in the media center and elsewhere), all of the persons from the neighbouring islands spoke about how wonderful the stadium is and how it fits in well into the architecture of Basseterre,” he noted. President Liburd revealed that the open grass area where spectators were allowed to observe the game drew high praise for being green rather than having stands all around the stadium.
Liburd thanked the fans for showing their support for the event. The crowd was described as one of the liveliest when compared to the previous matches of this series and the one versus Zimbabwe. The May 23 match attracted thousands of cricket fans on St Kitts and Nevis and from the region. Notable personalities from the sport including President of the West Indies Cricket Board Ken Gordon, ICC Cricket World Cup Venue Development Director Don Lockerbie, Leeward Island Cricket Association President Gregory Schillingford and former Windies captian and manager Clive Lloyd also attended. The local, regional and international media also had a heavy presence. Back...Most popular articles: viewed, printed and e-mailed
