Haitian Senate endorses prime minister nominee
Friday, May 26, 2006
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): Haiti's Senate on Wednesday voted to endorse the nomination of Jacques-Edouard Alexis as Haiti's new prime minister, a post he held from 1999-2001.
President Rene Preval's choice to lead Haiti's first elected government since former president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled two years ago won 22 out of 24 Senate votes.
The nomination now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for a vote Thursday.
Alexis, 58, was Preval's prime minister in the last two years of Preval's previous term as president from 1996-2001.
The 58-year-old agronomist also served as education, youth and sports minister in 1998.
Preval was elected in February in the first vote since Aristide fled an uprising in February 2004.
