At least seven dead as heavy rains pound Havana

Friday, May 26, 2006

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): The death toll from the heavy rains that pounded the Cuban capital this week has risen to seven, as flooding and power cuts continued to plague the coastal city, Cuban authorities said Thursday.

The torrential rains have also provoked severe swelling of the Quibu and Almendares rivers.

Seven people, aged 18 to 75, have died as the rains continue to douse Havana and the surrounding area. Eight of the city's 15 municipalities have been severely affected by the inclement weather, which has caused electricity and gas supply cuts.
