GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana will be giving GY$10 million (US$50,000) to assist its eastern neighbour Suriname. Suriname has been experiencing widespread flooding in the hinterland regions that resulted in the evacuation of residents from more than 100 villages.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing on Wednesday said that Cabinet considered the recommendation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for monetary contribution to the Surinamese flood response effort.

"Cabinet has pledged the provision of US$50,000 in money or kind to its sister CARICOM neighbour in its time of crisis," Dr. Luncheon said.

Cabinet also urged Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy to liaise with his counterpart on the categories of drugs and school supplies to be provided.

"The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Rudy Insanally would finalise details with his counterpart or with the Surinamese Ambassador to Guyana," Dr. Luncheon stated.

President Bharrat Jagdeo had earlier contacted his Surinamese counterpart President Ronaldo Venetiaan offering Guyana's assistance and solidarity.
