LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Regarding Grenada

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Dear Sir:

As a Grenadian living in Manchester, UK, I frequently take an interest in Grenadian affairs via the internet and speaking to other UK based Grenadians.

Recently I subscribed to a forum regarding all things Grenadian and posted my experiences when dealing with Grenada, which on the whole have been frustrating and fruitless. I also offered the forum administrator the chance to promote the positive points of the island to hopefully give me renewed drive and encouragement when taking an interest in Grenada.

Instead of encouragement I was replied to with the following.

"I am curious as to why you bother to post on this forum, seeing as you are totally negative where Grenada is concerned. The majority of visitors to this forum only want basic information so that they can make up their own minds about things. After reviewing your previous posts, which were all negative, I cannot fathom why you continue to visit. If Grenada only holds bad memories for you, nothing is stopping you from giving up your Grenadian passport. The island does have its bad points, but overall, it is better than the majority of other Caribbean islands. I know this for a fact. Just because your parents were from here does not make it compulsory to show an interest in the island. Please don't hesitate to pursue your interest in other destinations. Life is too short."

There is something stopping me giving up my Grenadian passport, I am a Grenadian.

I put it to you that this is attitude from someone who positions themselves as a mouthpiece for Grenada is the very thing that is stunting the growth and stifling investment in the island.

It is especially embarrassing for me a passport holding Grenadian to be met with this sort of reply, as you maybe aware Grenadians raised in the UK have enough problems with their identity as it is and to have it suggested that you can just' give up your passport' is nothing short of disgusting.

It would appear that Grenadians are totally uninterested in discussing any perceived shortcomings or developing any new processes for accomplishing goals in any direction or at any level. This staggering commitment to self and environmental improvement is what frustrates and eventually defeats anyone wanting to establish a business be it of manufacturing base or the service sector.

When this is the overall attitude perpetuated by school and church Grenada will never achieve the degree of growth and development it is capable of.

I have my suspicions the reply I received was from a person who does not want to change the status quo of Grenada for selfish reasons.
