Arrested Aruba suspect to be released
Wednesday, May 24, 2006
ORANJESTAD, Aruba (UPI): A Netherlands man arrested in connection with the disappearance of an Alabama teenager in Aruba was to be released but will be available for questioning, says his lawyer.
The 19-year-old man identified as Guido Wever didn't have to appear in court Tuesday under an agreement between his attorney Gerard Spong and Aruban prosecutor Karen Janssen but remains a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, reports CNN quoting an assistant to Spong.
Spong was quoted as telling a Dutch television network that his client was charged last week but that it could be proved he is not guilty if he was allowed to stay in the Netherlands, the report said. The attorney said his client had never met Holloway.
The CNN report said Wever, the 10th person to be arrested in the case, is an acquaintance of one of the earlier detainees. All the previous detainees have since been released.
Holloway disappeared May 30, 2005, while celebrating her high school graduation with about 100 classmates.
Aruba is a self-governing Dutch protectorate in the Caribbean.
