Curacao to negotiate tax convention with Trinidad

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Last week, Curacao's State Secretary of Finance, Alex Rosaria, met with Conrad Enill, Minister of Finance of Trinidad and Tobago, in Port of Spain.

The purpose of Rosaria’s visit was to officially inform the Government of Trinidad and Tobago about his intentions to start negotiations regarding a tax convention on double taxation with the twin island nation. This idea was reportedly welcomed by Minister Enill.

It was agreed that the Netherlands Antilles would as soon as possible send all relevant information to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, following which the technical teams of both countries can actually start the negotiations.

Trinidad and Tobago is the second most important CARICOM trading partner of the Netherlands Antilles. Trade and investment between the two Caribbean countries have been increasing in size and scope. The increase in commercial activities is also reflected in the onshore presence of banking and financial institutions of Trinidad & Tobago in the Netherlands Antilles.

Rosaria was satisfied with the outcome of his visit with Minister Enill. “The peoples of the Netherlands Antilles and Trinidad and Tobago have a long history of friendship based on mutual respect. The Government of the Netherlands Antilles wishes to enhance this relationship. Furthermore, I believe that the best way to face the challenges before us is to work together with our neighbours in the Caribbean Region with which we not only share a common history, but also the same characteristics of small economies," he said.
