ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: Ninety percent of the pitches in Grenada being prepared as practice grounds for World Cup 2007 are already complete, according to Sports Minister Roland Bhola.

Bhola, who recently toured the facilities, expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.

The National Stadium is not the only sporting ground under preparation for Grenada’s hosting of CWC 2007 matches. Work has also begun on the La Sagesse and Progress Park Playing Fields to be utilised as training grounds for the games.

According to Bhola, these facilities will be more than just a mere recreational grounds.

“What they will consist of will be storage for equipment being used by the grounds staff; a secure area for security officers; a pavilion for the two teams, with toilet facilities; a properly equipped medical room; and a dining room with a small kitchenette, so that the players and officials can utilize the two porches at the front, and players can sit and view what is taking place on the field,” said the Minister.

The Minister stated that, although Progress Park is more advanced than La Sagesse, both venues are progressing quite impressively.

“In terms of the field in Progress Park, we have to do just a little manicuring of the field, one or two areas where there is little depression we have to put in some more topsoil. For La Sagesse, we had to do a little bit more work on the field there.  We had brought in the mold and have been using a grader, but unfortunately over the last couple days we weren't able to continue that work because we had one problem with one of the graders”.

Monday also marks a significant and very important day for Grenada. The ICC CWC team headed by the Venue Development Director Don Lockerbie, will carry out an inspection on the Queen’s Park Stadium. This inspection will determine whether or not Grenada will be ready to stage its Super Eight game next year.

The ICC inspection will be followed by a Press Conference at the LOC office.
