Cuba-Key West flight stirs US officials
Friday, May 5, 2006
KEY WEST, USA (UPI): Two French environmentalists caused a stir when they flew a homemade plane across the Florida Straits from Cuba to Key West.
The pilots were questioned briefly by US Homeland Security officials, the Miami Herald reported Thursday. But Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said that for the most part the flight was routine with the crew filing a flight plan in Havana and following it.
She said that Cuban air traffic controllers handed off the flight to their counterparts in Miami without any problems.
The pilots are affiliated with a Monaco-based group called Wings for the Earth. The group's slogan -- "For the Harmony of People and their Environment'' -- was painted on the plane's side.
After a stop in Sebring, Florida, for maintenance, the two environmentalists planned to fly to Africa.
