FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique: Jamaican World Junior 200 metre record holder Usain Bolt returned to the track in style, following his late withdrawal from Commonwealth Games in March, by winning the men's one lap event at the Meeting du Conseil General NACAC Area Permit Meet on Saturday, 29 April, in Martinique.
Bolt, who suffered a hamstring strain just before the Jamaican contingent departed for Melbourne in Match, crossed the finish line in 20.08 seconds, the fastest time in the world this season and appears set to lower the 19.93sec personal best he ran two years ago in this campaign.
"I think it is a good performance," Bolt's coach Glen Mills was quoted as saying in a local newspaper on Tuesday. "To run 20.08 at this time, it must be a good performance.
"I am happy for it (Bolt's time)... we are always trying to go out and run well," added Mills, who wasn't present to see Bolt run at the meet.
Like fellow country and 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, Bolt, the 2002 world junior 200m champion from Kingston, Jamaica, has been plagued by injuries for the past two seasons, but if Saturday's run at Stade de Dillon is any indication of what's to come, the world can expect great things from the Jamaican on the circuit this season.
Martinique-born French sprinter Ronald Pognon took second to Bolt in 20.53sec, while Seth Amoo of Ghana took third in 20.65.
Earlier Pognon won the men's 100m dash in a modest 10.19sec, despite the absence of American veteran and former world record holder Maurice Greene.
Americans Bernard Williams and Dabryan Blenton finished second and third respectively. Williams, a medallist at the last World Championships from Helsinki, last year finished second in 10.23, while Blenton placed third in 10.27.
American Torri Edwards won the women's 100m dash in 11.29, holding off compatriot Wyllesheia Myricks, at 11.48.
In other results, US Virgin Islands' Laverne Jones won the women's 200m in 23.01, Trinidad & Tobago's Ato Modibo defended his 400m title in 45.35 from Chris Lloyd (DMA) - 45.46, while American World Indoor champion Terrence Trammell took the 110m hurdles in 13.22sec over Ladji Doucouré (FRA) - 13.52.
