Puerto Rico government shut down by financial crisis
Tuesday, May 2, 2006
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (UPI): Some 95,000 Puerto Ricans found themselves without jobs Monday when the government shut down a number of offices and schools.
The mass shutdown was the result of a financial crisis gripping the U.S. territory, El Nuevo Dia reported. Puerto Rico's Congress reportedly cannot agree on how to make up for a $740 million shortage in the budget.
Gov. Anibal Acevedo has blamed the island's legislatures for the shortage and is seeking the introduction of a 7 percent sales tax.
Puerto Rico currently has no sales tax.
