GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Immigration officials and financial institutions in Guyana are on high alert following the theft of passports from the Central Immigration Office in Georgetown, the country’s capital.
One hundred Guyana passports were discovered missing on Monday from the Office of the Deputy Chief Immigration Officer, officials said.
Police officials said the passports are new and were not issued to anyone. The serial numbers of the passports are 1142301 to 1142400.
Police Investigators have since visited the scene and discovered that a padlock had been sawn off which facilitated entry into the room where the passports were secured. Keys may have also been used to facilitate the theft, police said.
Investigators have asked financial and other institutions not to accept any passport bearing the serial numbers of the stolen passports.
