Eleven bodies discovered on boat adrift off BarbadosMonday, May 1, 2006by Dawne Bennett BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Local police and forensic experts are trying to determine the circumstances that led to the deaths of eleven people, whose badly decomposed bodies were discovered on a boat adrift off Barbados. No official confirmation has been given about the nationalities, sex and race, but Caribbean Net News has been informed that authorities believe that the eleven are men who travelled from West Africa. Among some of the personal items found on board the 20-foot unnamed boat were some Euro currency and a document indicating travel aboard one of Senegal's airlines. While initial reports indicated that the men were shot, investigators believe they may actually have died from hunger and thirst. No food or water was found on board the vessel. Police Public Relations Officer, Station Sergeant David Welch, said the boat was discovered by fishermen about 76 nautical miles south-south-east of Ragged Point, St. Philip on Saturday morning. That evening, the Coast Guard's HMBS Trident was deployed, along with a police forensic team and doctor and the boat was towed back to the Coast Guard Headquarters at Willoughby Fort late Sunday morning. Station Sergeant Welch said officials from the Port Health Department cleared the boat for any possible communicable diseases before forensic experts were allowed to investigate and remove the bodies, which were later removed and transported to a funeral home. The experts will continue their investigations Monday to confirm suspicions that the men died from lack of food and water or to determine what else led to their deaths.
