Powell cruises to victory at Penn RelaysMonday, May 1, 2006by Gary Smith PHILADELPHIA, USA: Jamaican world record holder Asafa Powell easily won the men's Olympic Development Men's 100m dash at the 112th Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field on Saturday 29 April. Another cruise for Powell Powell, the 2006 Commonwealth champion from Melbourne, Australia, clocked 10.10 second to win in front of an estimated 50,000 crowd. Finishing second to Powell was American Rodney Martin, who clocked 10.24 sec, while fellow countrymen Anthony Buchanan, 10.25, took third. "I'm very happy," Powell said after the race. "I ran 30 meters and took it easy. I shut it down about 65 meters in." "They're crazy out there. It's like I was in Jamaica. I'm excited to see the people. The fans are what fuel me." Great Britain's former world junior champion Mark Lewis-Francis, who now trains in the US at a training camp in Florida, was no match for Powell as he finished sixth in a disappointing 10.42. Another Jamaican, Yhann Plummer, raced away with section two of the event in 10.46. He defeated fellow Jamaican Clement Campbell (10.52) and Faulcon Andre (10.77). Baptiste improves national record with dash win Kelly Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago defeated American rival Marshevet Hooker in the College Women's 100m dash. Baptiste, who had the 5th fastest time heading into the Penn Relays meeting, improved the 11.12 national record set by Fana Ashby when she tied Lauryn Williams meet record with a personal best time of 11.10 and held off a determined Hooker, who was close behind, at 11.17. Baptiste's Louisiana State teammate Sherry Fletcher of Grenada finished fourth in 11.58sec. Baptiste picked up her second gold medal on the day when she combined with Fletcher, Deonna Lawrence and Brooklyn Morris to win the College Women's 4x200m relay in 1:31.65. South Carolina picked up the silver with a time of 1:32.05, while Tennessee, anchored by Jamaica's Patricia Hall won the bronze in 1:32.50. USA too much for Caribbean teams In the Olympic Development Men 4x100 - USA vs. the World relay, a Jamaican team of Michael Frater, Ainsley Waugh, Chris Williams and Dwight Thomas finished second to a strong USA Blue side, which included World and Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin and Olympic 200m winner Shawn Crawford. The Jamaicans, running without world record holder Asafa Powell, clocked 38.95 to finish behind the USA Blue team, who won in 38.33. However, despite finishing second in their heat the Jamaica had to settle for fourth overall. Also competing in the event was world silver medallist Trinidad and Tobago, who ran without 2003 world silver medallist Darrel Brown. The Caribbean side took third in the USA Blue heat and fifth overall in 39.22. Still dominating A strong USA Blue team of Rachelle Boone-Smith, Muna Lee, LaTasha Colander and Lauryn Williams ran away with the women's race in 42.81. The USA Red team of Angela Williams, Angela Daigle, Stephanie Durst and Amandi Rhett won the silver in 43.58, while Jamaica's team of Brigette Foster-Hylton, Sheri Ann Brooks, Peta-Gay Dowdie and Aleen Bailey took the bronze on 43.87. The United States swept the men's and women's 4 x 400m relay for the sixth time in seven years. A USA Blue side lead by Jamaican-born Sanya Richards' 49.80 anchor leg, won the women's race in 3:23.51 over Jamaica (3:26.85) and USA Red (3:28.70). "It was great weather today. That makes a huge difference mentally. It helps you get in the right place mentally to execute in the race," Richards said after the race. "I wanted to get out there and put on a show. We wanted to win and win big. I think we did that." Four teams crept under 3:01 The USA Red team won the men's race in 3:00.09 as four team crossed the finish line under 3:01 or better. Finishing behind them in second and third were the USA Blue team, which included Trinidad-born won indoor record Kerron Clement in 3:00.19 and a World All-Stars team that included Dominican Republic's 400m hurdles star Felix Sanchez and Grenadian 2006 World indoor champion Alleyne Francique, at 3:00.53. Defending champions Jamaica led by two sub-45 splits from Sanjay Ayre (44.90) and Jermaine Gonzales (44.60) was fourth in 3:00.83. A Bahamas side of Avard Moncur, Nathaniel McKinney, Jamal Moss, Timothy Munnings took fifth. Jamaican High Schools dominant again In high school division, Jamaican schools, Holmwood and Camperdown swept the boys and girls' 4x100 and 4x400 relays races. The Schillonie Colvert led Holmwood team won the girls 4x100 in 44.56. The team of Bobby-gaye Wilkins (55.9), Annastasia Le-Roy (54.0), Schillonie Calvert (53.9), Sanita Sutherland (53.2) then clocked 3:36.98 to win the 4x400 crown. Led by a blistering second leg from Remaldo Rose, Camperdown walked away with the boys 4x100 title in 40.13, before adding the 1600m relay crown to that feat in 3:11.46. Rose was clocked at 46.5.
