UK/CARICOM security cooperation under discussion in BarbadosThursday, April 27, 2006ROAD TOWN, BVI: The UK/CARICOM Security Cooperation Agreement is one of the issues being discussed as British Virgin Islands Chief Minister Dr Orlando Smith and other CARICOM leaders met in Barbados on Wednesday at the Fifth United Kingdom-Caribbean Forum, which runs until Friday. The Chief Minister will participate in discussions on international developments and their implications for achieving medium and long-term development in the Caribbean. They will also discuss the UK-CARICOM Security Cooperation Agreement, which provides for a plan of action, involving border security, maritime cooperation, training of security and law enforcement officials and the establishment of a regional information and intelligence-sharing network. The forum will also discuss governmental policy in the region on issues such as trade, energy, private sector tourism, financial services, disaster preparedness, and HIV-AIDS. The Chief Minister said he will use the opportunity to raise issues of concern to the Territory with UK Government officials. He said the meeting will also allow Overseas Territories to discuss how the region could forge a better working relationship with the UK. The forum, held once every two years, is being co-chaired by the UK’s Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Foreign Minister of Grenada Elvin Nimrod, who is incoming Chairman of the CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR).
