Police in Guyana say gunmen intended to execute the country's agriculture ministerWednesday, April 26, 2006by Gordon French GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Police in Guyana have now backed up the government's claim that the country's agriculture minister was intentionally targeted for assassination and that the demand for money was just a cover. Police Commissioner Winston Felix had earlier stated that the police were pursuing all possible leads including robbery. "Based on a careful study, scrutiny and analysis of the total picture surrounding the incident, it now appears that the bandits intended to eliminate all possible eye witnesses and execute the Minister and his family. A secondary motive seems to have been robbery," a police release issued late Monday confirmed. On Saturday, gunmen killed Minister Satyadeow Sawh, his brother, sister and a security guard. Three others were also injured in the attack. Police have confirmed that a strange car was seen parked in the area hours before the attack and its occupants may have been monitoring Minister Sawh's movements. In addition, other gunmen were seen positioned in a nearby street north of the Minister's home during the attack, apparently to provide covering fire to those carrying out the execution, police stated. Ballistic tests confirmed the use of at least six firearms, five of which may have been AK 47's or M 70's, and one of which may have been an SLR or G3. Officials also stated that based on the extraction of pellets from the body of a dog which was killed; it is suspected that a shotgun may have also been used. Police confirmed that at least two of the weapons used at the minister's murder scene were also used at the Agricola/Eccles killings that left eight dead earlier this year.
