Haitian president-elect Preval to hold talks in Venezuela

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): Haitian president-elect Rene Preval was to embark Monday on a 24 hour visit to Venezuela where he is due to meet President Hugo Chavez, Preval's office told AFP.

"It is a friendly visit, President Preval will take advantage to set the basis for future discussions with President Chavez," one of Preval's officials said.

The two leaders will discuss the oil program "Petro Caribe" organized by Caracas to sell oil at low prices to Central American and Caribbean countries, including Haiti.

They will also discuss the 1980 San Jose accord, under which countries in the region can gain long-term development financing benefits in exchange for buying fuel products from Mexico and Venezuela. The accord was renewed by Mexico and Venezuela in 2004.

Preval will be accompanied by a Haitian businessman, a union leader and the Haitian representative from the Inter-American Development Bank.
