PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: The Trinidad and Tobago government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a US firm for the establishment of an ethylene plant at Point Lisas, South Trinidad.
The plant is expected to uitilise about 100 hectares and generate about 5,000 local jobs at the height of its construction, which is expected to begin next year and be completed in 2010.
Trinidad's Minister of Energy, Dr Lenny Saith, said that the integrated complex will comprise an ethylene cracker complex and a polyethylene plant complex.
He added that small and medium enterprises would be opened with opportunities with the project providing Government with an equity stake of up to 30 per cent.
The project would be developed over three phases, with the first phase requiring an input of 37,500 barrels per day of ethane for the production of 570,000 metric tons per year of ethylene plus derivatives.
The minister signed the US$1.5 billion MOU with the Westlake Chemical Corporation of USA.
