Caribbean environmentalists to meet in Trinidad over threats to whales

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Some twenty-four environmental experts from across the Caribbean region are expected to meet in Trinidad this week to discuss ways of dealing with threats to whales.
The meeting is being undertaken ahead of the 58th annual conference of the International Whaling Commission to he held in St Kitts and Nevis in June this year.
Scientists, marine researchers as well as whale-watching operators will be part of a two-day gathering to he held in Port of Spain on April 19 and 20. A healthy whale population is being highlighted as critical to the survival of the region's ecosystem and economic prosperity.
The two-day whaling conference is being co-ordinated by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFA), the Institute for Marine Affairs (IMA) and the Council of Presidents for the Environment (COPE), as well as the Caribbean Youth Environmental Network, (CYEN).
