Seven Cuban mothers face legal proceedings over trafficking

Tuesday, April 18, 2006

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Seven mothers are to face legal proceedings for endangering the lives of their minor children in an intercepted human trafficking attempt, Cuba's official Granma newspaper said Monday.

The legal move was linked to an April 5 incident in which the Cuban government said it had halted a human smuggling operation along the island's southwestern coast.

A speedboat from the United States disobeyed orders to stop and border patrol agents opened fire, killing a crew member, authorities said. Thirty-nine people, including 14 women and seven children, were detained in the operation.

"Taking into account the gravity of the acts perpetrated by the families of the minors, putting their health and lives in grave danger, the seven mothers who have the custody of the children will be subjected to legal proceedings," Granma said.

"Thirty-nine people had to be rescued along the coast, including 14 women and seven children, aged between 23 months and 14 years, who were found in very difficult conditions, hoping to emigrate illegally," the report said.

The report added that the intercepted group had been in jeopardy from high temperatures and a lack of drinking water. It said some of the children had required urgent medical assistance.
