Former West Indies players backing SarwanMonday, April 17, 2006by Gary Smith PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Despite champion batsman Brian Lara being named in a poll of six candidates to take over the vacant post of West Indies captain, former West Indies players Maurice Foster and Bryan Davis believe Ramnaresh Sarwan is the man for the job. In March 2003, Sarwan was named vice-captain to Lara after showing leadership qualities in the Guyanese side and Foster is backing him to fill the post left behind by his countryman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. "I believe he has been a vice-captain for some while without being given the responsibility of captaincy," Foster, the former middle-order batsman told the Trinidad Express Newspaper. Apart from Lara and Sarwan, the list of contenders also includes wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin, Chris Gayle, Daren Ganga and Sylvester Joseph, with Wavell Hinds' name floating around, but Davis doesn't feel they should be picked ahead of the Guyanese right hander. "I can't see (Chris) Gayle and I can't see (Wavell) Hinds. I can't see Brian Lara at this stage of his career. I can't see (Daren) Ganga because I don't think he's a certainty on the team," Davis explained. Since making his Test debut with a brilliant undefeated 84 against Pakistan in 2000, Sarwan, the current vice-captain of the West Indies team, has played 59 Tests and 91 One-Day Internationals. When the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announces the new captain for the upcoming Zimbabwe One-Day International tour, it will be their seventh captaincy change in the past nine years.
