Netherlands Antilles' Martina flashes to sprint double at UTEP InvitationalMonday, April 17, 2006by Gary Smith EL PASO, USA: The Netherlands Antilles' sprinter Churandy Martina continued his rich form this season by signaling his intent to dominate the sprints at the collegiate level when he produced two of the world's best times this campaign on his way to winning a sprint double during the UTEP Invitational at the Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas on Saturday. No wind assisting this time Last week at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Martina clocked 10.04 seconds to win the 100m. However, he was robbed of a legal time because of a +2.5 tail-wind. The Caribbean sprinter returned to his familiar track to show his time was no fluke and that he did when he crossed the line in the same time to win UTEP Invitational title, only this time the +1.9 mph wind speed made his performance legal. Following Martina to the finish line was Chauncey Harris at 10.27, while Jamaican Steve Slowly finished third in 10.34. Martina's winning was a regional record, demolishing the previous mark of 10.47. His gutsy performance now puts him behind Jamaican world record holder Asafa Powell, who leads the world with a year best 10.03, established to win the Commonwealth Games crown in Melbourne, last month. Career best and another record for 200m If the Netherlands Antilles' superstar's 10.04sec was sparkling, then his world leading 20.27sec was even more impressive. Texas is known for fast times because of the strong wind assisting the sprinters, but Martina's winning time was accomplished in a +1.7 mph wind reading, which means he surpasses American Jeremy Wariner as the fastest half-lap runner this season. Slowly took second in the event in 20.63, switching places with Harris who came home in 20.68. Slowly's Jamaican countryman Dewayne Barrett finished 5th in 21.34. For the second time at the meet Martina demolished a regional record and in the process improved his previous personal best of 20.32. Martina picked up his third gold medal when he ran a scorching third leg in his side's 39.73 winning performance in the 4x100 relay. Harrigan doubles up too Tahesia Harrigan from the British Virgin Islands, competing for the University of Alabama, was also on fire en route to capturing the women's sprint double. Like Martina, Harrigan captured 100m dash in regional record time of 11.13, before returning to complete the double with the year's 8th best performance of 23.21. Harrigan won another title by leading off Alabama in a record 44.64sec run in the female 4x100 relay. Back...Most popular articles: viewed, printed and e-mailed
