GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana’s air transportation sector will be boosted when three new air carriers are licensed. Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Secretary to Cabinet, Dr Roger Luncheon, said Cabinet has authorised the granting of licenses to Caribbean Air Systems, TRAVELSPAN Guyana Inc and E-JET Inc.
The airline carriers would begin operations in Guyana shortly after being granted licenses to provide services regionally and internationally.
Luncheon explained that Caribbean Air Systems will provide a regional service to Belem/ Cayenne/ Paramaribo/Port of Spain/ Caracas/ Curacao/St. Maarten and Santo Domingo.
TRAVELSPAN Guyana Inc, a sister company of the existing TRAVELSPAN Inc. providing charter services between Port-of-Spain and North America, would provide direct service to New York. According to Luncheon, E-Jet Inc. will service the Georgetown-New York and Georgetown-Toronto routes.
The three carriers will be establishing escrow accounts and performance bonds prior to commencing operations, which is expected by the peak season 2006. Luncheon said the sizes of the accounts were individually decided upon based on the range of service to be offered, among other factors.
Apart from North American Airlines, there are British West Indian Airlines (BWIA), Caribbean Express and Meta currently offering services in Guyana.
Officials in the CARICOM country are hoping that in the long-run, Guyana will become a hub for north-south traffic in the Americas.
