Jamaica include rookie Johnson in squad to face USAFriday, April 7, 2006by Gary Smith KINGSTON, Jamaica: Ryan Johnson, a rookie at US Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake City, has been drafted into Jamaica's team for their friendly international against USA in North Carolina next Tuesday. Johnson was Real's 26th overall third round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and Jamaican coach Wendell Downswell has high expectations for the 21-year-old striker. "Ryan Johnson, from all indications, is doing exceptionally well at the college level and now he has been drafted into the squad of Real Salt Lake and the club is quite excited that he will make a healthy contribution," Downswell told the Jamaica Observer. Another player making his debut for the national senior side is defender Demar Stewart, who plays for locally-based club champions Portmore United. "We've been looking at him in the Premier League which has done a lot for him," Downswell said about the former national under-23 representative. The 18-man squad also includes four England-based players: goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts (Bradford City), midfielder Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Rotherham), and defenders Damion Stewart (Bradford City) and Claude Davis (Preston North End). There are also several young players and other US-based professionals included in the Reggae Boyz team, who will also face World Cup title contender England on June 3 in Manchester. "This is part of the development so we can look at a number of players as we look to the game against England and beyond," Downswell added. Full Squad: Goalkeepers: Donovan Ricketts (Bradford City, England), Shawn Sawyers (Portmore). Defenders: Claude Davis (Preston North End, England), Omar Daley (Portmore United), Garfield Reid (Waterhouse), Damion Stewart (Bradford City, England), Demar Stewart (Portmore United), Oneil Thompson (Boys Town). Midfielders: Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Rotherham, England), Fabian Dawkins (Harbour View), Jermaine Hue (Kansas City Wizards, MLS), Jason Morrison (Portmore United). Forwards: Ryan Johnson (Real Salt Lake, MLS), Teofore Bennett (Village United) and Newton Sterling (Village United), Khari Stephenson (GAIS, Sweden), Jermaine Johnson (Tivoli).
